Law enforcement officers attacked a group of peaceful civil rights protestors crossing Selma's Edmund Pettus Bridge on March 7, 1965. The images of the beatings and gassing of protestors on the bridge shocked the nation!

The Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama is a symbol of the civil rights movement. On March 7, 1965, law enforcement attacked voting rights marchers on the bridge in an event known as "Bloody Sunday". 

Significance:

  • Civil rights turning point

    The televised violence on the bridge shocked the nation and was a turning point in the civil rights movement. 

  • Voting Rights Act

    The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson less than five months after the attack!
